Days 50 to 69: Half Way There

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 6/28/09

As the challenge reaches the halfway point, the families reflect on their experience thus far and speculate on the road ahead.

James shakes things up by turning the tables on the 100-milers, insisting that the non-cooks get kitchen experience. Alex Weremchuk heads off for a lesson in spices from acclaimed Chef Vikram Vij, while Mike St. Cyr works hard to pull off a birthday dinner for his wife Angela. Reluctant cooks Alma Hawes and Alisa band together to make an elaborate dinner for Randy and James.

Elsewhere, the 100-milers go back to the land to get their meat. The Weremchuk Williams family goes trout fishing and has to catch and prepare the fish. The Clark Vernons turn their lamb Duncan into "Dunc-links" sausages, using herbs from Johanna Clark's garden and bartered salt from Angela St. Cyr's mother Ellen.

Recipes from the Show

Stuffed Tomatoes
These were part of the multi-course feast that Alma and Alisa cooked for Randy and James, but you can enjoy them as a simple side dish or even a light lunch.

Sure, you've tried spinach salad before, but have you tried spinach salad à la Randy Hawes?

This was the cornerstone of the lavish meal Alma and Alisa prepared for Randy and James. Coq au vin means, literally, "rooster in wine". Traditionally, older roosters are used because they contain more connective tissue than younger chickens, resulting in a richer broth, but any good-quality chicken will yield excellent results.

Simple, easy, tasty... exactly what roasted potatoes should be. If you're lucky enough to live in an area enjoying an early bounty of baby potatoes, give this recipe a try.

Alma and Alisa cooked up a storm in episode 4. This was the pièce de résistence of their feast. We hope Randy and James saved room for dessert.

When he designed this unusual pizza, James was inspired by the most local, seasonal food offerings available. After you try his recipe, why not create your own, celebrating what's in season in your area right now?
