Food Producer Spotlight: The Garlic Garden

Garlic season is here, and residents of Yorkton, Saskatchewan know that they can count on The Garlic Garden for their supply of fresh garlic, scapes, and even garlic powder.

Darrel and Anna Schaab started The Garlic Garden in 2005 with little idea of how quickly their business would take off. They give their excellent fertile soil much of the credit, but we reckon the obvious affection they have for their crop - as evidenced on their website - has something to do with their success.

Spotlight On: Lunenburg County Winery

Sure, liquors and distilled spirits may be out for 100-mile purists, but if you live near the Lunenburg County Winery on the south shore of Nova Scotia, you'll never need to complain about lack of variety in your choice of wines.

With wines made of every local fruit imaginable - including blueberries, raspberries, peaches, apples, pears, and even rhubarb - combined with unexpected ingredients such as elderflower, maple and honey, you could take home a bottle of each and uncork a new one every evening for weeks.

Lunenburg County Winery follows traditional winemaking methods using only the finest-quality fresh fruit in season, grown at Hackmatack Farm, the winery's own 100-acre blueberry farm in Newburne. What the winery doesn't grow itself, it sources from neighbouring growers in Lunenburg County, the Annapolis Valley, and Nova Scotia.

Spotlight On: Country Lane Grain & Milling

Sourcing flour is a top concern for Mission's 100-milers, but if you live within 100 miles of Winkle, Manitoba, you can rest easy that you'll never go without your daily bread... or muffins, or pancakes, or pasta.

Country Lane doesn't just offer a dizzying selection of organically grown grains and legumes - everything from barley to rice to wheat - they also do all their own milling on site, reviving the kind of stone grist mill that was all but extinct by 1900.

Established almost 30 years ago, this small family-run farm is deeply committed to environmental stewardship, both in terms of crop management and protection of the local water supply.

"We know contented cows are happy, productive cows."

The Steves family has a long farming and ranching tradition. With operations located in Steveston, BC, and Cache Creek, BC, the family prides itself on treating its animals with respect from birth onward. All of their purebed Belted Galloway steers are raised from calves, primarily grass fed, and hormone and antibiotic free. In addition to beef, the family also sells 75 varieties of heritage vegetables and seeds. All can be bought directly from the farm or ordered through their website.

Food Producer Spotlight: Picard's Peanuts

Picard's Peanuts doesn't just grow peanuts. According to this article (which extols the virtues of the 100-mile PB&J), you can also custom-grind your own peanut butter on site. It doesn't get much more grassroots than that.

A family business for more than two decades, Picard's pioneered the first commercial shelling plant in Canada and now processes over a million pounds of peanuts every year. In addition to selling a variety of nuts, peanut oil is also available. (Good to know if you want to try your hand at the 100 mile challenge yourself, since local oil can be tricky to source.)

If you live near one of their many Ontario locations, be sure to pay Picard's Peanuts a visit.

For locations and more information, see the Picard's Peanuts listing in our Local Food Producers directory. While you're there, browse the other 1,000+ Canadian food producers you'll find. You can even customize your search to find producers within a 100 miles of your postal code!

Food Producer Spotlight: Anton Kozlik's Canadian Mustard

Earlier today we posted that going local means giving up on most store-bought condiments. If you're lucky enough to live in the Toronto area, mustard doesn't have to be one of them.

You'll be forgiven for not knowing that Canada grows over 90 percent of the world's mustard seed, or that our country is home to the world's largest and oldest mustard mill. You'll even be forgiven for not knowing that Kozlik's has been a purveyor of more than 30 unique flavours of mustard since 1948. But you won't be forgiven for passing by their Front Street storefront without going in for a sample.

See Anton Kozlik's listing in our Local Food Producers directory. While you're there, browse the other 1,000+ Canadian food producers you'll find. You can even customize your search to find producers within a 100 miles of your postal code!
